Fentanyl is becoming an increasing issue for many communities across the country due to its potency and cheap production. As such, many states are strengthening the laws surrounding this substance. In Oklahoma, for example, a bill is currently in the process of waiting to be signed into law. As such, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the proposed changes introduced in Senate Bill 1280. The following blog explores what you should know about this potential fentanyl bill and what you must connect with
What Would Senate Bill 1280 Change About Fentanyl Laws in Oklahoma?
Recently, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond enacted an Organized Crime Task Force to respond to the growing number of illegal marijuana operations throughout the state. While carrying out operations, it was discovered that many of these growers were also distributing fentanyl. As such, SB 1280 looks to increase the penalties for crimes related to this drug.
Fentanyl is a powerful opioid, infamous for how potent it is. A dose as small as two milligrams, small enough to fit on the point of a pencil, is a lethal dose for the average American adult. When combined with the low cost to produce, this drug is an incredibly popular choice.
Authored by Senator Darrell Weaver, SB 1280 looks to increase the penalties for those found adding fentanyl to other drugs. As such, those convicted of manufacturing fentanyl by adding it to other substances would face a minimum of seven years in prison with the potential for life behind bars if this bill is signed into law. This is to combat the growing trend of lacing other drugs with the dangerous fentanyl. Over the past few years, deaths caused by an overdose of this substance have skyrocketed, calling for changes to occur.
It’s important to understand that this bill has passed both the Senate Public Safety Committee and the full Senate. Now it is in the hands of the House before being sent to the Governor, who will enact it into state law.
